Hybrid discussion on 'Brexit ten years on: Northern Ireland and its future' with Matthew O'Toole and Adam Payne

Hybrid London/Zoom
01 July 2026

Speakers:
Matthew O'Toole, Leader of the Opposition & Member of the Legislative Assembly for South Belfast, Northern Ireland Assembly
Adam Payne, Editor, PoliticsHome
Chair: Anton Spisak, Senior Research Fellow, Centre for European Reform

Northern Ireland has lived with the consequences of Brexit more intensely than any other part of the UK. Ten years after the referendum, this event will examine how leaving the EU has affected Northern Ireland's politics, economy and society – and what it means for its future, particularly as debate over Ireland's reunification becomes more prominent.

Matthew O'Toole will begin the event by reflecting on the past decade from the perspective of being a former Downing Street official, Member of the Legislative Assembly for South Belfast and Leader of the Opposition in the Northern Ireland Assembly, after which Adam Payne, Editor of PoliticsHome, will respond. Anton Spisak, Senior Research Fellow at the CER, will then chair a Q&A discussion with the audience. The event will be on-the-record and recorded.
