Discussion on 'Ukraine: Winter is coming'

Ukraine has had a relatively successful summer on the battlefield, inflicting heavy casualties on Russian forces and taking back some territory in the east. It has also reduced Russian oil refinery capacity significantly through strikes deep into Russia. Russia has concentrated on stopping Ukrainian grain exports and steel production, and on hitting energy infrastructure, schools, hospitals and cultural institutions, in an effort to disrupt everyday life and demoralise the population. US President Donald Trump, not for the first time, is putting pressure on his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, to make concessions amounting to capitulation to Russia. It seems likely to be a difficult winter for Ukraine. The UK has pledged unwavering support for Ukraine - but what does that mean in practice? What can the UK and its European allies do to help Ukraine survive the winter and capitalise on its front-line successes? And what else can be done to increase the pressure on Russian leader Vladimir Putin?
