
What is the perception of defence industrial partnerships with the EDTIB by non-EU countries? The case of the United Kingdom
The UK’s approach to defence capability development emphasises international partnerships. Britain has close relationships with many EU countries. At the same time, the UK looks to non-European partners as well, in particular to the US, but also Australia and Japan. Defence exports are primarily outside of Europe. The British defence ecosystem does not have a uniform view of the EU’s deepening involvement in defence capability development. Scepticism that the EU will emerge as a major player co-exists with concerns that UK defence firms will be shut out of the continental market if EU defence tools gain momentum. The Labour government is currently negotiating a security partnership with the EU, which might pave the way for closer UK involvement in EU defence initiatives.
