The recently published Draghi report focused on the need for change to boost sustainable European competitiveness. It highlights the impact of inconsistent and restrictive regulation on innovation, the need for holistic policy planning on sustainability objectives, and calls for a re-focused foreign economic policy. But at the same time, a series of new regulations is anticipated to increase complexity for businesses, including for foreign firms trading with Europe. There has been a surge in tech regulation these last few years. New traceability requirements are set to come into place for a range of products, including paper and textiles. As part of the proposed customs reform, the €150 de minimis customs threshold will be abolished, and the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism is gradually entering into force for metals and fertiliser, with the possibility of later expansion to other products. Introducing and implementing such a wide range of reforms could present considerable challenges, both for companies and authorities. Our roundtable will discuss the status of these reforms and their likely impact. Are European companies and authorities ready and what will be the impact on economic growth?
