“Regime change? The European Economy to 2030” – The CER’s new research project on the European economy

The Centre for European Reform recently published a short Bulletin article on the future of the European economy. Here’s Bob Hancké‘s review:

Bob Hancké writes: An excellent short piece by John Springford of the Centre for European Reform on the future of the European economy. His piece examines large trends, with a peek into the future, in Europe’s labour market, macroeconomy, industries, demographics and migration. He makes the interesting point that the future of Europe will be about how to handle distributive problems that arise from entirely new technological, economic and social developments. From what we can see now, he says, there may well be stark winners and losers, and the EU (and its member states) is going to have to manage those potentially deep inequalities. In his words: ‘Unlike in the 1970s, solutions to the EU’s current problems require the Union to get involved in distribution – of the costs and benefits of technological change; of the burden of adjustment to recessions; and of migrants from outside the EU between member-states.’
