The EU and UK both have policies towards China based on a mixture of co-operation, competition and challenge. Both see China as a crucial economic partner. Both have become dependent on China for some critical products and materials. But the EU and UK are under pressure from the US to apply tariffs on China to punish it for purchasing Russian oil; and China's support for Russia is increasing the military threat that Russia poses to Europe. The Indo-Pacific region is one of the areas that the EU and UK have agreed to consult on regularly. Can they find a common strategic approach that balances the opportunities and risks in their relations with China?
The event launched Ian's policy brief, 'China and Europe: Can the EU and the UK find a shared strategy?'.
