Armida van Rij is a senior research fellow at the Centre for European Reform and a non-resident senior fellow at the Chicago Council on Global Affairs, specialising in transatlantic relations, European security and foreign policy, and European politics. She has a decade of experience in convening strategic dialogues, analysing policy and supporting government policy-making.

Before joining the CER, she was the Head of the Europe Programme at Chatham House. She previously led the Conflict Analysis Team in the International Security Programme at Chatham House, and worked at the Policy Institute at King’s College London and the EU Delegation to Myanmar.

She has served as an expert witness to the UK House of Commons Defence Select Committee and UK House of Lords European Affairs Committee, and has advised governments on a range of foreign and security policy issues.

Armida frequently provides commentary on geopolitical issues in European and international media. She has written for Foreign Policy, The Guardian, NRC Handelsblad and is a regular contributor to BBC News programmes such as Radio 4’s Today Programme and The Context.
