Josep Borrell: The EU’s undiplomatic top diplomat

Borrell going beyond what EU countries agreed contributed to the perception that the EU is divided on the conflict, said Luigi Scazzieri of the Centre for European Reform.

 At the same time, Borrell’s remarks have also helped signal to the Middle East that some Europeans are willing to be more robust in holding Israel accountable, said Scazzieri of the CER.

“If the EU as a whole had Borrell’s position, it would be significantly easier for it to fight the accusation of double standards and hypocrisy,” Scazzieri said.
